Welcome to the Gloucester City & South Tewkesbury (Bishops) SSP Website.
We do hope that this site will help you to find valuable information on our School Sport Partnership (SSP).
OUR VISION TO OFFER YOUNG PEOPLE 5 HOURS OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY PER WEEK
Sept 2008 - Sept 2011
The SSP is part of a government scheme to assist schools & young people to increase participation of school PE for young people from 5 years through to age 19. The Gloucester SSP started in 2002 and is lead by the Partnership Development Manager (PDM) in conjunction with local schools. Secondary schools have School Sport Co-ordinators (SSCo) based within their school who have various roles including forming good links to outside feeder schools. Through this team the scheme also looks at increasing the quality of activity offered and the pathways to community and elite sport for all young people by engaging with a host of other partner agencies.
Schools are now not alone as we take on this new phase of School Sport Partnerships. It is now a target of government to offer at least 2 hours of PE on the curriculum & 3 hours physical activity outside this, including links to the community. We have many strands including extending our own team with SSP Sports Coaches to extend services into the community and Competition Managers who plan to assist the organisation of competition in Gloucestershire.
To assist 16-19 year olds to stay active we will have a Further Education Sports Coordinator (FESCO) based at Gloucestershire College. With the success of the 2008 Olympic Games, especially for the Great Britain team strands will still include offering a postive pathway for participation and also support potentially gifted & talented athletes with the last strand to offer more opportunities for all pupils including pupils with disabilities to include all young people to become a healthier, fitter & more competitive county.
The 5 hour offer is going to be hard to achieve, however the more partners who work together then the more we can achieve for young people.
